Dona Paula in Goa

Once a rocky headland dividing the Mandovi and Zuari estuaries, Dona Paula has emerged as one of the famous tourist spots and cannot be left out in case one wishes to tour the city of Panjim. Conveniently located just 7 kms from the main city, it has vastly gained commercial significance in the form of a beach resort.

The Cabo Raj Bhavan, which is the official residence of the Governor besides the Dona Paula beach and water sports activities also cannot be overlooked when one is in Dona Paula. There are also ruins of an old cemetery built by the British during their short stay at Cabo in order to prevent French invasions in Goa.

There are many legends surrounding this place, the most popular one being that of the Viceroy’s daughter who after facing objection to her love affair with a poor fisherman committed suicide by jumping off a cliff at this very spot. It is also believed that she was drowned owing to her alleged affair with the Count of Alvor.

This spot became very famous as the Lovers Paradise in her memory and her spirit is still believed to haunt this place reminding people of her romantic liaisons with her lovers and is said to even emerge at night from the moonlight waves wearing a solitary pearl necklace.
