Located there are the National Sports Stadium, National Swimming Pool, main-line train station, famous meat / fish / fruit / vegetable markets, varieties of reputable restaurants, shopping centres, supermarkets, indoor market, banks, government offices and courts etc.

A new by-pass road in Nuvem has been recently completed and the traffic on the NH17 which goes through Gounlloy has improved substantially. There is a very good restaurant called Goan Paradise (owner - Sonu) at the junction with NH17. Food is excellent and the prices are very reasonable - much cheaper than beach shacks and other restaurants in the town. You will not see many tourists in this restaurant. There are a couple of grocery shops in this junction where you can get your daily supplies such as milk, bread, eggs, butter, ice cream, soft drinks, bottled water, mobile top up service etc. There is an off-licence wholesaler just down the road on NH17 if you fancy something stronger.

As far as the beaches are concerned, we spend most of our time in Anri's Shack (owners - Anvil and Rita) in Sunset Beach which is located between Betalbatim and Majorda beaches. This is the only shack in this beach. It is clean, quiet and free of usual tourist hassles as in busy beaches like Colva and Canlagute. A lot of Brits use this beach. There are a number of loungers under the shade or you can use the sun loungers on the beach. A lot of tourists use taxi service to take them to the beach and get them back to their hotels or holiday accommodation - usually the same taxi everyday. We usually hire a small car - Rs 1,000 per day.

I am an NRI and live in UK. Born in the hills of Darjeeling, India. Has travelled extensively in India. Family reason has derailed our plans of retiring in Goa - hence the house is up for sale. Goa has a very laid back life style. Crime rate is very low and it is the safest state in India. We feel very safe in Goa. Goan's are mostly Christians and they are very friendly indeed. Goa relies very heavily on tourism as its main source of income. The tourist season starts from October and ends in mid May. You can get charter flights from various countries during this season.
