Vasco rocks to Carnival beat

The industrial hub of the State rocked to the music of the various floats, as the Carnival parade was organised in Vasco on Monday evening.

People from all over the State lined up on both sides of the Swatantra Path, to view the 72 floats participating in the three-hour parade.

GTDC Chairperson Fatima D' Sa along with Mormugao MLA and chairman of Vasco Carnival Committee (VCC) Karl Vaz, Mormugao Municipal Council chairman Manesh Arolkar, NCP General Secretary Servillo Barros andcouncillorAmold Rego flagged off the floats, in the presence of Tourism Minister Dr Wilfred de Souza.

The floats were spread across the categories of traditional (9), club and institutional (10), fun junk show (9), family (9), clown/ jockers (30) and sponsored (6).

Many of the floats depicted the importance of nature and its possible destruction if the controversial Regional Plan had been adopted by the State government.

Though Indian football coach Bob Houghton had ruled out the India chances of qualifying in the 2010 FlFAworldcup, that did not deter football crazy Goan fans from parading a float with a ' Vision India for FIFA World Cup 2010'. The parade later ended with a display of fireworks.

Incidentally, those who were keen to get elected into the VCC were absent at the carnival parade.

A strong policeforce, under the supervison of DySP Dinraj Govenkar and four police inspectors, was deployed to maintain law and order during the parade. Traffic arrangements were regulated to ensure that there was no traffic congestion in the port town.
