Thousands watch carnival parade in Mapusa

Thousands of enthusiastic spectators thronged all along the route to witness the carnival parade in the city on Tuesday evening.

The parade, which commenced at Feira Alta, culminated at Gandhi circle, after wending its way through Feira Baixa, Angod and the market area.

The parade was flagged off by GTDC Chairperson Fatima D'Sa, in the presence of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Sneha Bhobe, Vice-Chairman Vinod Phadke and other councillors. Mapusa MLA Francis D'Souza was however, conspicuous by his absence.

Though a large number of floats participated in the parade, the traditional charm of the carnival was notably absent.

Niz Goenkar, a traditional float depicting the Kunbi community from Quepem was highly appreciated by the public. Another float depicting Dr Jack Sequeira, father of the Opinion Poll, was also well received by the spectators. Some foreigners also participated in the parade.

Mapusa police made elaborate security arrangements for the smooth conduct of the parade. In the absence of barricades, police had a tough time in controlling the crowds from spilling over the parade route.
