Shigmo floats thrill Vascoites

 
 

Revellers thronged Swatantra Path to witness the float parade, romtamel and the folk dance competition in the port town of Vasco this evening.

The float (Chitrarath) parade was based on mythological scenes and was appreciated by the crowd. The competition started at around 6 p.m. from Hiralal Thakker House and was flagged off by former Mormugao municipal council (MMC), chairperson, Mr Sharad Chopdekar.

In all 94 participants in four categories including, floats (Chitrarath)-53, romtamel- 12, folk dance- 24 and fancy dress- 5 participated.

In the floats category, the mythological scene presented by the Marcel Nagrik Samitti depicting 'Vairbhav Rahu Chandracha' got a good response, while the other floats like 'Vara Shankhasur Yudh' by Sri Sateri Yuvak Kala Sangh, Sanvordem, Curchorem, 'Dattatreya Sindhuri Yudh' by Ravalnath Sai Kala Mandal, Adpai and 'Makhan Chor Kannaiya' by Om Sai Friends, St Cruz were also attractive one.

In romtamel category, Dongri Shigmotsav Samitti, Vadal Wada Shree Bhingeshwar Prasanna, Marcaim, Shree Govindnath Shigmotsav Samitti Mandal, Tishem, Borim were good. This year, the Murgao Nagrik Shigmotsav Samitti has introduced the fancy dress competition.

The women's participation in the romtamel category was also admirable. The Jagruti Mahila Mandal, Vasco created history in Goa by participating in the romtamel competition and also enthralled the spectators to the beats of dhol, tashe and samel to the tunes of 'Ossai Ossai'.

When the group leader of Jagruti Mahila Mandal, Vasco, Ms Neny D'Souza and the President of JMM, Vasco, Ms Kanti Khutwalkar were contacted by 'The Navhind Times' they said that they were pleased to participate in the romtamel competition. The group consists of 100 women.

The MNSS, president, Mr Milind Naik stated that the Shigmotsav Samitti this time received a good response from the participants and it is a record in the history of the port town that in all 94 participants in different categories showed their talents.

The North Goa MP and State Unit BJP, President, Mr Shripad Naik was the chief guest, while the GPYC president, Mr Girish Chodankar was the guest of honour.

The programme was followed by the prize distribution ceremony and the firework display. The programme was compered by Mr Vinayak Ghonge and Mr Santosh Khorjuvenkar.
