Goa, one of the smallest states on the Indian Sub continent is located along the coast squeezed between the Arabian Sea and the Western 'Ghats' mountain range. Goa covers an area of 3,702 sq km (1,429 sq miles). It has everything; sandy beaches, dense forests, paddy fields and is steeped with cultural heritage.
Goa's history and culture can be traced back to 1510 when Alfonso de Albuquerque, established a Portuguese colony in 'Old Goa' which formed an important trading post and resting stop for the 'spice' ships travelling from Europe to the Orient.
The evidence of 450 years of colonial rule can be seen all over Goa from the grand Portuguese houses, the white washed Catholic churches and of course the local surnames – from D’Silva to D’Souza and from Pinto to Pereira.
In 1961, Goa became part of the Indian Union. The local people blended with Indian culture but still maintained their uniqueness when it came to music, dance and cuisine. Many of the older generation still speak Portuguese and modern day Goa still envelopes the colonial way of life.
Goa has always been a mystical place just as popular with the hippies in the 60’s as is today for the thousands of International and Domestic tourists who visit each year wanting to experience the Goan spirit and soak up the warmth of the local people.
