The Mahamaya Devi temple is located at Jaquem in the Sanguem taluka. It is dedicated to goddess Mahamaya Devi who is known to be a fierce form of Goddess Durga.
According to legend it is known that during the battle between the Gods on one side and the demons or Asuras on the other, Lord Indra the king of Gods, fought against the mighty Mahisasur. In this battle as the demon overwhelmed Lord Indra, the other Gods went to Lord Vishnu & Lord Shiva. Due to this cowardly act, both Lord Vishnu & Lord Shiva got angry and combined their powers to create "Mahamaya", a goddess with all the good qualities.
Mahamaya was later known as Durga or Jagdambe or Jagatdhari and was known to be responsible for the destruction of all the demons including the mighty Mahisasur. The temple dedicated to her in Goa can be reached by taxi or bike. There is also another temple dedicated to goddess Mahamaya Devi at Ratanpur in Chhattisgarh.
