Shiroda
The village of Shiroda is exquisitely beautiful and artistic and has densely covered tall green palm fringes with salt planks appearing like artificially placed white pearls. The beach is also picturesque with sparkling clear blue water, amidst clean white sand and the cool breeze whispering through the tall plantations and salt depots in the village.
The Shiroda beach has been a significant part of Goan history in terms of the Salt Satyagraha which was first sparked off by Mahatma Gandhi and some part of the Satyagraha was carried out here wherein a lot of protestors were arrested trying to rob salt but couldn't be stopped from looting salt until this controversy was resolved by permanent settlement of equality with General Irwin.
The Shiroda village is one the significant places in and around Ponda Taluka as the famous Kamakshi Temple and Rayeshwar temple is found here. These are so famous that the Ayurvedic and Engineering College is dedicated to these deities.
The Kamakshi temple situated in Shiroda is dedicated to Kamakshi or Goddess Kamakhya, originally a deity from Guwahati, Assam. She is also known as Parvati or consort of Lord Shiva and is known as Shantadurga or Goddess of Peace. The original temple of the deity was in Raia in Salcete Taluka which was destroyed during the missionary activities and the idol of Kamakshi was carried away to Shiroda where it is now situated.
