The National Institute of Watersports (NIWS) has been setup by the Ministry of Tourism as a "mother" training institute for watersports to usher in an era of adventure tourism in the country.

It is the first such Institute in South East Asia and would cover the entire range of watersport disciplines such as sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, scuba diving, river rafting and kayaking. 22 types of courses have been developed, not only for the watersport professionals and managers, but also for tourists visiting Goa.

It is envisaged that the Institute will serve as a model to the private entrepreneurs with its qualified staff, training infrastructure, state of art watersport equipment and specialised repair and berthing facilities. The institute is expected to expand its activities to other adventure sports so as to transform itself into a Institute of 'Adventure' sports comprising of watersports, wintersports, aerosports and mountain sports.
